In 1972, the alternate paper Vermont Freeman published an essay by Bernie Sanders entitled “Man — and Woman” when the future U.S. senator included a mention of the a girl fantasizing about rape. After Sanders gained governmental prominence as a presidential prospect in 2015, that essay had been taken to wider attention in a profile of Sanders posted by Mother Jones on 26 might 2015:
What Sanders did share aided by the young radicals and hippies flocking to Vermont had been an idealism that is smoldering during their college years as a civil rights activist — he coordinated a sit-in against segregated housing and went to the 1963 March on Washington — but just a fuzzy feeling of how exactly to act about it.
